I appeared to be well: I had a beautiful family and home, good friends and a good job that provided many benefits for my family. I had worked in healthcare my whole life and I thought I was taking care of myself by working out and eating what I thought was healthy most of the time.
My life was filled with 30 years of chronic stress. I had no history of disease or illness before my diagnosis and I was ‘happy’ but I had been living my life from the outside in, round and round on the hamster wheel of life like so many of us do today. I was always doing something, with my mind ticking away with the to-do lists from yesterday and what needs to be done tomorrow. Being a Physical Therapist and working for the pharmaceutical/biotech industry, I strove to live a “healthy” life, but the truth is I had no idea what a healthy lifestyle meant or even what well-being was and why it is important.
In 2016 I was diagnosed with severe Crohn’s Disease.
One day, while living my seemingly ‘good’ life, my stomach started to hurt. Thinking it was just a stomach bug, I passed it off and kept going… The general pain progressed to stabbing pain and after three days, I drove myself to the hospital (thinking I might need my appendix out). To my surprise, my appendix was fine (for now) but I had multiple ulcers, a fistula, an abscess and so much inflammation that my doctor couldn’t even get a pediatric scope through my intestines. After spending three nights in the hospital, I was diagnosed with severe Crohn’s Disease and I needed to be on heavy-duty medications immediately. This was the beginning of my journey to be well.
Through my health crisis and my return to being well, my concentrated research and expanded teachings properly educated me about the things I thought I knew about health, what well-being is and why it matters so much. It also shined a light on our healthcare system and opened my eyes to how most human beings are not healthy. I learned how to be well. I’m grateful for everything I’ve been through, for what I’ve learned and for where I am today. It took me getting brutally sick to finally wake up and realize I needed to make changes to my lifestyle to become truly well.

We can prevent disease and suffering but we must take action to become well today!
