What does it mean to be well?

The concept of ‘wellness’ or ‘being well’ in today’s context has become much more complex. 20 years ago being well was defined as merely being ‘absent of disease.’  Simply posing the question “are you well?” will produce a myriad of answers in today’s environment. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental & social wellbeing.” It defines mental health as “a state of wellbeing in which every individual realizes his/her potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and can make a contribution to his/her community.” Defining wellness or well-being needs include a multi-dimensional approach to align with the current expectancies of life:

  • Medically/clinically well
  • Physically well
  • Mentally / emotionally well
  • Socially well
  • Financially well
  • Spiritually well
  • Well at work

We can go even broader (or more specific) and look to encompass things like engaging in interesting activities, a sense of belonging, developing confidence, achieving goals, having meaning & purpose, self-acceptance and personal growth. When looking to address wellness at work, we need to adopt the same broad definition of wellness to ensure it aligns with our people’s expectations and has a sense of value for the individual. The good news is that—with practice, we can enhance our well-being and achieve a state of balance and contentment. We can thrive!

How much longer do you want to continue to be unhappy, in pain and unwell? The choice is yours to make. What kind of life do you want to have?

9 subtle signs it’s time to address your well-being

9 subtle signs it’s time to address your well-being

Just because you seem to be functioning doesn't mean there isn't something wrong under the surface.  Not all disorders show up in the vivid ways we envision or as portrayed in the media.  Living with even a mild affliction can still seriously impact your quality of life and overtime potentially turn into something more serious if not addressed early on.

If you're doing one of these things, your well-being needs some TLC:

1. You don't enjoy the things you used to

2. You're sleeping all the time

3. You don't have the energy you used to

4. You're forgetful

5. Other people are noticing changes

6. You're feeling particularly achy

7. You're staying in more

8. Your appetite has changed

9. You keep getting sick and can't shake that cold, headache or pain

Any shifts in behavior or anything that's making you feel less yourself is a wake-up call for you to keep an eye on your health.
